Who will win IPL 2020?

IPL 2020 Winner Trophy

Updated 28 July 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has meant the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was delayed from its original start date of 29 March.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suspended it until 15 April, but sadly coronavirus had other ideas, and it was quickly postponed indefinitely.

The good news is the IPL is set to resume this September after the BCCI accepted an offer to stage the tournament in the United Arab Emirates. While final approval, dates, and match fixtures have yet to be published, we thought it was time we reviewed our IPL prediction on who will win IPL 2020.

It looks like the tournament will now be held from 19 September-8 November, meaning it will run as a normal 51-day IPL. Each team will first have three to four weeks of training in the UAE, giving them time to acclimatise to slightly different conditions.

There are many issues to consider when looking at the new tournament:

  • How will teams be affected without any home advantage?
  • How will players adapt to new conditions?
  • Which team will feel less pressure without any fans, and what teams will struggle without support?
  • How will scoring be affected with only three venues available? (The Dubai International Stadium, Sheikh Zayed Stadium (Abu Dhabi), and Sharjah)
  • Psychologically, how will players react to being away from home for so long in a bio-secure 'bubble' to reduce the threat of anyone catching coronavirus?

How we picked the IPL 2020 winner

CricketPrediction.com uses pioneering AI technology combined with an extensive database of cricket statistics and data to predict cricket matches and give accurate value betting tips.

Our original IPL 2020 winner article was written back in February. We predicted Kolkata Knight Riders as the best bet - the team whose chances had been most underestimated by the bookmakers.

But with new factors to consider we have re-run the numbers to take into account the new IPL structure. Teams with strong home records and, of course, those with poor away records are now playing on a more level playing field.

Will this change our opinion on who we think will win the IPL 2020? Read on to find out!

How the IPL betting odds look

The odds for the IPL are tight. With only eight teams, the biggest-priced teams are Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals at 10.00.

Mumbai Indians and Hyderabad Sunrises are fighting for favouritism at 5.00 and 5.50, respectively.

Best Odds (28 July)

Bookmaker Winning Percentage Chances

Mumbai Indians

Hyderabad Sunrisers

Chennai Super Kings

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Delhi Capitals

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kings XI Punjab

Rajasthan Royals

Remember - always take the best odds. For example, Delhi Capitals are as short as 5.50 with one bookmaker. If you had a winning bet of ₹10,000 on Delhi Capitals at 5.50, you would get ₹55,000 in returns.

A nice win, but if you had bet at the best-price of 8.00, you would get back ₹80,000 - a difference of ₹25,000!

And look at the margin for the market. The percentages add up to 112.4 - meaning the bookmaker's margin is a hefty 12.4. This suggests too many teams are priced up at shorter odds than they should be.

Our IPL 2020 winner

Win IPL 2020

Question: Who will win IPL 2020?

Answer: Chennai Super Kings

CSK is one challenger for the Vivo IPL 2020 trophy.

Chennai Super Kings

Head coach: Stephen Fleming
Captain: MS Dhoni

With the new venues, it seems best to keep things simple and Chennai Super Kings tick most of the boxes. What's more, the bookmakers only rate their chances of winning at 16.7%. Our prediction model put their winning chance at 21.6% - so there is definitely value in taking the 6.00 on offer.

The 'true' odds, in our opinion, should be 4.63.

So, why are Chennai Super Kings the best bet for IPL 2020 glory?

Chennai Super Kings famously lost the 2019 final to Mumbai Indians by just one run in what was an incredible finale. Cricket is all about margins and on the day, Mumbai Indians were marginally better, but they had luck on their side.

Many fans will swear Chennai batsman MS Dhoni should not have been given out, and big games swing on huge decisions like that.

That Mumbai win saw the team overtake Chennai with the most IPL titles - four to three - but there doesn't seem to be enough of an argument to have Mumbai clear favourites by a full point over Chennai this time around.

Chennai have the best win record in IPL history - 61.28% - better than second-best Mumbai (57.75%), although Mumbai have played 13 more games.

Chennai also hold various other records which makes them a formidable team. They are the only IPL team to reach the playoffs every time they have featured in the competition. They have the most playoff appearances (10) and most final appearances (8).

The one big negative is that they have lost five of those eight finals. But one thing Chennai have in abundance is the ability to bounce back from disappointment.

MS Dhoni is a calm presence in the squad and a great leader - not to mention a fantastic cricketer!

Critics have picked away at the older Chennai squad over the last few seasons, but Stephen Fleming still manages to get his men to play good cricket year after year.

With some interesting additions this season to add competition to the more established internationals, Chennai look the solid choice.

Suresh Raina's form with the bat has been worrying, but power and flair comes in the shape of Shame Watson and Faf Du Plessis, and rising talent Ambati Raydu and Kedar Jadhav. Rayudu averaged 43 in the winning 2018 campaign and granted improvement will be a big player for Chennai once again.

Josh Hazelwood is a fine addition to the bowling attack. His accuracy will be a huge asset to go with the likes of Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo.

On the spin front, Piyush Chawla, one of just four bowlers to boast 150+ IPL wickets, is another top addition to the squad. And don't forget 23-year-old spinner R Sai Kishore, who had a phenomenal economy of just 4.63 when taking 20 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The dry batting-friendly pitches of UAE will mean Fleming can utilise this wide array of bowling talent - expect him to figure out early on which of his men can excel with the ball.

With Sam Curran in the ranks too, this is a strong squad. And for many senior players it could be their last hurrah at a top IPL side, so expect them to come out all guns blazing.

Their win record suggests they will fare better than many other sides at the neutral grounds in UAE, and the mix of young and old in the squad looks like striking the right balance for keeping team morale up outside India.

News the squad has been training particularly well, and reports that Chennai are heading to UAE early to acclimatise is also positive news and should give them a small head start on their opponents.

Finally, that consistency will be a big asset playing on unfamiliar wickets and in grounds where it will take a few matches before the players know where their strengths and weaknesses lie.

Next best IPL team

Vivo IPL 2020 winner prediction is KKR .

Kolkata Knight Riders

Head coach: Brendon McCullum

Captain: Dinesh Karthik

Our original fancy was Kolkata Knight Riders, who we predicted had a winning chance of 17%. That's better than the odds the oddsmakers give them (12.5%), although some betting sites offer just 7.50 odds (13.3%).

Our belief was that KKR's poor performance in the last couple of years might be why cricket traders had underestimated their chances.

However, without home advantage and the tricky wicket we were expecting at the Eden Gardens, we feel they have now lost some of the edge.

Consequently, we have downgraded their winning chance to 13.9%. While an overall win record of 52.52% is still respectable, three team's rank higher and our prediction model gives this stat much more strength than normal now all games are 'away'.

Record Rs. 15.5 Crores signing Pat Cummins, plus England World Cup winner Eoin Morgan, add serious depth to a talented squad, but whether they can handle the pressure on a consistent basis is the worry.

New head coach Brendon McCullum's first big challenge is keeping his big stars from clashing. There was speculation Morgan would become captain, but they have stuck with Dinesh Karthik. Could this cause tension?

Probably not, but suddenly there are a lot of big-names in the side, and with Karthik heading to the UAE on the back of an average 2019 season, he could easily feel overshadowed by Morgan if that one hits the ground running.

Other batting power comes from special talent Andre Russel - the only player to win the MVP award without his side making the playoffs. He is a proven match-winner.

Their bowling attack boasts Kuldeep Yadav and Sunil Narine. The Windies star might not be the same force that he was in KKR’s two title-winning campaigns, but he is still a worthy adversary for rival batsmen.

Aussie bowler Chris Green was relatively unknown when picked up from the auction, and while he has yet to hit the headlines for prolific wicket-taking, his economy if 7.12 is mightily effective.

A good betting strategy is always about evaluating and re-evaluating betting chances with respect to the odds and data available. Our prediction model still gives KKR a slightly better chance of winning IPL 2020 than most betting sites, but the margin is too small now, and we cannot recommend them as our main IPL tip anymore.

Which teams will reach the IPL Playoffs?

IPL 2020 Champion

Our prediction model estimates good chances for Mumbai Indians to reach the IPL 2020 Playoffs - as you would expect from many people's favourites. Another team we think will reach the IPL playoff stage are Delhi Capitals. Below we give you an outline on the most important factors affecting each team in our IPL 2020 playoffs prediction.

Mumbai Indians may reach the IPL playoffs this year.

Mumbai Indians

Head coach: Mahela Jayawardene

Captain: Rohit Sharma

Mumbai Indian will not be crowned IPL Champions 2020 according to our extensive data simulated forecast. Even so, reaching the IPL Playoffs will be easy for this team. MI have retained a huge chunk of their squad post their win last year.

Even so, the defending Champions still went ahead and secured the services of Chris Lynn (Rs. 2 Crores) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (RS. 8 Crores).

While the former will be a formidable force at the top of the line-up alongside Quinton de Kock, the latter will be instrumental and adding the much-needed balance. The complete squad for MI indeed looks solid.

Add to this a strong Indian core of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Rahul Chahar. Mumbai Indians have the freedom to chop and change the team as per their needs.

Delhi Capitals have a strong team in this year IPL

Delhi Capitals

Head coach: Ricky Ponting

Captain: Shreyas Iyer

Ignoring the KKR odds, bookmakers around the globe have, and I am using this word very deliberately, disrespected one team - Delhi Capitals. DC finished level on points with Mumbai and Chennai last year with a bench filled with potentially great players.

Their core of Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Sandeep Lamichhane, and Kagiso Rabada is good enough to put the fear of god into any team.

How do you improve that? You buy one of the best spinners in the world in the form of Ravi Ashwin, via a trade. Then you make a splash in the auction buy Shimron Hetmyer (Rs. 7.75 Crores) and Marcus Stoinis (Rs. 4.8 Crores). Just Imagine, Jason Roy (Rs. 1.5 Crores), Alex Carey (Rs. 2.4 Crores), and Chris Woakes (Rs. 1.5 Crores) are mere backups in this team!

At 8.00, this is a serious price to consider. They are clearly one of the heavy favourites to make the playoffs yet again at the very least.

Does any other team have a chance to qualify for the IPL playoffs?

The best thing about the IPL is the fact that every year there are a few teams that surprise. Even so, these dark horses, more often than seldom, don't manage to go all the way.

Question: What happens when you put match-winners like David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Rashid Khan, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the same team?

Answer: A dark horse!

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Head coach: Trevor Bayliss

Captain: Kane Williamson

When you have all those players in one team, you always have a chance. And there is no reason to doubt the ability of the team to perform above and beyond expectations. However, we do not see it that way.

While Warner and Bairstow are spectacular and maybe the best opening partnership in the IPL, the players following them leave a lot to be desired. This was emphasised last year when the duo aggregated for a massive 1137 runs in 22 innings, but all they could manage was 12 points.

And this year, the way they thought was solving the problem was by acquiring the services of Virat Singh (Rs. 1.9 Crores) and Priyam Garg (Rs. 1.9 Crores).

Sunrisers Hyderabad seem to have become a favourite among many tipsters and odds compilers online. This is not our opinion.

SH will be a challenger to one of the four playoffs spots, no doubt. However, placing a bet on them to become IPL 2020 winners is not a value pick for any punter at current prices.

Who will finish bottom of the IPL table?

Maybe you have already figured it out. We have this far into the article mentioned only six of the eight teams competing for the IPL 2020 Cup. In other words, the only two left are the two fighting for number seven and eight in the table. We are of course talking about Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals. We will also give you an idea to why we forecast these teams to end up in the bottom.

KXIP at bottom of IPL2020 in our forecast.

Kings XI Punjab

Head coach: Anil Kumble

Captain: KL Rahul

Can you imagine a team that possesses power hitters like Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, Glenn Maxwell and skill players like KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Mandeep Singh being valued at odds 10.00?

Well, Kings XI Punjab never cease to amaze us in the IPL. The value is less about the squad of players assembled and more a critique of how dysfunctional it is up in Mohali.

While their batting looks very secure, the bowling is a whole different ball game. They might have added Sheldon Cottrell (Rs. 8.5 Crores) and Chris Jordan (3 Crores), but still, the team lacks any sort of real threat.

We strongly recommend that you stay away from this team as it is highly likely to end in tears!

RR is expected to end up at the bottom in IPL this year.

Rajasthan Royals

Head coach: Steve Smith

Captain: KL Rahul

Apart from the acquisition of Robin Uthappa for Rs. 3 Crores in the auction, the only real positive for Rajasthan Royal fans would have been saving some money on Jaydev Unadkat for another three Rs. Crores this time around.

With Steve Smith, Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, and Ben Stokes, the champions of the inaugural season have one of the best foreign cores in the game. However, it is the rest of the squad that is a problem.

They don't possess a pacer who can share the load consistently with Archer, nor do they have a spinner. These facts can get even the most dedicated fans to their feet. They will win a couple of games because of their strong core. Nevertheless, all in all, RR fans should prepare themselves for a long, painful season.

Even at odds of 10.00, this is not a bet that punters should be looking to make.
