Hyderabad police on Wednesday took 23 individuals in custody for allegedly being involved in online betting on the ongoing Indian Premier League 2021 fixtures. Upon receiving information that such activities were taking place in seven spots in the city, the police acted on it and managed to capture 23 bookies, Cyberabad Police Commissioner M Stephen Raveendra stated. He further added that the racket is organized in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana primarily by a bookie named Maha, who is still on the loose
The police have seized Rs. 93 lakh in cash along with televisions, laptops, betting boards, phones and laptops among other possessions worth a total of Rs. 2.21 lakh, as reported by the Times of india.
The betting odds of the gamblers are frequently updated on various online betting platforms once they have been provided by the agent. The illegal transactions for placing bets is usually carried out through online means, but the bookies resort to cash if the amount in question is substantial.
The police revealed that such networks of online gambling run by these bookies have in the past lured many young people in the city, who eventually get addicted to the activity. There have been instances where they play high stake games and end up losing a large portion of their hard earned money, the police added.
