Twenty-nine People Arrested for Gambling in a House in Chennai

On Thursday, Chennai police arrested 29 people for gambling in a leased house.

As per a report in New Indian Express, the police said that the raid was conducted by a special team led by the Foreshore Estate police based on a tip-off. The police seized Rs. 9.55 lakh cash from the raided apartment and arrested 29 people involved in gambling over cards there. Those arrested were booked under the Gambling Act and were later released on station bail.

The raided apartment is located on Karpagam Avenue in Raja Annamalai Puram, Chennai. The place was leased by a man named Prabhu, three years ago. Prabhu works with a private company.

There have been other reported cases of gambling as well in the city in the recent past. Last month, Chennai police arrested 12 people including Tamil actor Shaam for alleged gambling activities at his house near Nungambakkam area in Chennai. Packets of playing cards and tokens were seized from Shaam’s house. Those arrested were later released on bail.

The state has even seen action on the online gambling front. Recently, the Madras High Court urged that the Tamil Nadu government should pass a law to regulate online games like rummy, poker, and ludo. The court expressed concern that online gambling attracts unemployed youth and leads to addiction.

On the other hand, Dr S. Ramadoss and K Ramakrishna have both pushed central and state governments to ban online rummy and other gaming sites and apps.
