Four-day Tests should be considered, cricket should be open to change, opines Jos Butler

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is looking into the probability of having 4-match Tests from 2023 to curtail the workload of cricketers in a season. Apart from that, the added incentive is too cut down the costs. As per reports, The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has shown inclination in support of the idea.

English cricketer Jos Butler has admitted that there’s no harm in introducing four Day Test matches in International cricket. Even the decision will come under much criticism from the traditional cricket fans, the cricketer feels that tweaking the format to some extent might actually make it more alive and preserve the game. Butler is of the idea that cricket needs a change has to evolve, four-day Tests might be the pathway.

“I think the administrators and broadcasters have got to look at the best way to preserve Test cricket. It’s the best form of the game, so how can we maintain that and keep moving the game on?” said Butler as reported by the Guardian.

“If that’s the option, moving it to four days, that has to be looked at. I like that it’s five days, when you get a fantastic Test that finishes on day five with all three results possible there’s nothing else really like that in cricket. As with everything times change, things change, and the game has to evolve with that. Everyone has to be open to change if that’s what is needed,” he added.

With most of the Test matches ending within four days, especially in Australia and South Africa, the proposed change might be a welcoming one. Meanwhile, the ECB is set to star the 100-ball league in 2020.
