The Board of Control for Cricket in India President Sourav Ganguly had said earlier that India will play England, Australia and one other top cricketing nation in an ODI Super Series starting from 2021. Ganguly wants to use this idea as a counter and wants to prevent International Cricket Council from organizing a global event every year.
The former Indian captain flew down to England recently to meet with the officials of England Cricket Board and it seems that they have had a fruitful meeting as the ECB is open to taking the idea further. Meanwhile, Cricket Australia CEO Kevin Roberts is impressed with the BCCI President’s idea and has lauded him for putting it forward.
"I think it's an example of the innovative thinking coming out of the BCCI with Sourav Ganguly as president. In his very short time, only a couple of months, we have already seen India commit to and host a day-night Test in Kolkata, so a brilliant result there. And now a suggestion around the Super Series, another potential innovation," Robert told the media as reported by The Times of India.
Robert also opined that cricket is treated as a religion in the sub-continental countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Therefore, being one of the leaders in world cricket, they would want to better their relationship with these cricketing nations and help them develop the game in the near future. Robert also said that Australia is looking forward to hosting Afghanistan in the next calendar year.
"Cricket is more or less a religion on the sub-continent. It's absolutely the favorite sport in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. We've got to try and make sure we see the game emerging in countries all around the world. We're really respectful of the importance of our international cricket relationships and our role as a leader in world cricket in supporting the development of cricket in other countries,” Robert added.
"We're looking forward to hosting Afghanistan next year and that is an example of our commitment to world cricket. We have discussions with all member nations of the ICC and take very seriously our role to partner them and working together with them to grow the game around the world.”
