Australia are currently playing the second Test match of the Trans–Tasman series against New Zealand at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Steve Smith and Travis Head are at the crease at the end of Day 1 with Australia having scored 257 runs for the loss of four wickets.
After the Aussies lost their second wicket, Smith walked out to bat in front of a record crowd (more than 80,000) on a single day during an Australia–New Zealand Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. While he walked out to bat Smith received a mixture of boos and cheers in his own country.
The booing was definitely for Smith’s year-ban by Cricket Australia as he was involved in the case of ball-tampering in a Test match against South Africa which was being played at Cape Town. However, going by the look of his innings so far in this first innings of the Test match against the Kiwis, it does not look like Smith was perturbed as he went on to remain unbeaten on 77 at the end of Day 1 and he is surely hungry for more.
“Is that what happened? I have no idea. I didn’t really listen when I walked out to bat. Cheering, booing, dunno. I have learnt to block it all out, regardless, good or bad,” Smith told the media after Day 1 as reported by Sportstar.
Ever since he returned to the longest format of the game, he has been absolutely fantastic with his piece of willow. He single-handedly scored 774 runs during Australia’s Ashes tour of England earlier this year at an incredible average of 110.57. The fact which is more interesting here – Smith holds an outstanding record at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as he has scored a century in each of his last four Test matches at this venue leaving the one against India in which, he could not feature due to the ban.
