Marcus Stoinis fined $7500 for homophobic slur against Kane Richardson

Big Bash League team Melbourne Stars’ member Marcus Stoinis has been fined by Cricket Australia for directing personal abuse at Melbourne Renegades’ fast bowler Kane Richardson.

When the Melbourne Derby was being held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday, Stoinis went a little too far and made a homophobic slur at Richardson, who was bowling to him. The on-field umpires Gerard Abood and Phillip Gillespie noticed the same and reported the incident to the match referee Daryl Harper.

Cricket Australia did not waste much time to slap a hefty fine on the all-rounder. However, Stoinis went ahead and accepted his fault and he has also apologized for his act.

"I got caught in the moment and took it too far. I realised immediately I was in the wrong and I apologise to Kane and the umpires. I did the wrong thing and accept responsibility for my actions. The standards are there for a reason and I accept the penalty," Stoinis told the media as reported by Hindustan Times.

Cricket Australia’s head of integrity and security also came out and spoke against the act and stated that there is no room for such acts in this beautiful game.

"The behaviour in this matter falls short of the standards we expect, and we have acted accordingly. There is no place for it in the game," Carroll told the media after Cricket Australia slapped the fine on Stoinis.

James Pattinson was earlier banned for a match because of a similar act he committed while he was playing in the Sheffield Shield, as a result of which he missed the first Test against Pakistan
