CPL 2026: What’s New This Season

The 2026 edition brings the biggest structural change in the league’s history. For the first time, the CPL expands from six teams to seven, adding new franchise Jamaica Kingsmen, who play their home games at Sabina Park and open the entire tournament on 7 August.

The Barbados franchise reverts to its original name, the Barbados Tridents, ending a five-year run as the Barbados Royals. The change comes under a three-year “One Barbados” partnership, with the Government of Barbados set to join as a minority co-investor and the team returning to its traditional blue-and-yellow colours under captain Rovman Powell.

Barbados also hosts the final for the first time: the title decider is scheduled for 20 September at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. In total the expanded league plays 39 matches (35 in the league stage and four in the playoffs).

How the CPL Format Works

The CPL is a conventional Twenty20 competition: 20 overs per side, a six-over powerplay, and the same playing conditions used across international T20 cricket. That makes it more familiar for bettors than the 100-ball Hundred, but Caribbean conditions give it a distinct character.

With seven teams in 2026, each side plays a home-and-away league schedule before the top four advance to a four-match playoff: Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the final.
