SRH’s IPL 2026 squad has 25 players built around the most destructive batting core in the tournament. Heinrich Klaasen (₹23 crore, SR 172.7 in 2025) and Travis Head (374 runs, SR 162.61) return alongside new signing Liam Livingstone (₹13 crore). But captain Pat Cummins will miss the opening matches with a lumbar stress fracture sustained before the 2025-26 Ashes. He last played competitively in December 2025.

SRH finished 6th in 2025 (6 wins, 7 losses, 1 no result — 13 points) despite individual brilliance because the spin bowling had no depth after Washington Sundar’s departure. The same vulnerability remains in 2026. SRH open the entire IPL 2026 season against defending champions RCB on March 28 at Chinnaswamy Stadium, without their captain.

The Departures

Heinrich Klaasen scored 487 runs in IPL 2025 at average 44.27 and strike rate 172.7. His 105* off 39 balls (SR 269) against KKR was the most destructive individual innings of the season. At ₹23 crore, he is SRH’s highest-paid player and their match-winner. On pace-friendly surfaces like Hyderabad (avg first innings 204), Klaasen is almost impossible to contain.

Travis Head made 374 runs at SR 162.61 with 3 fifties in 2025. His powerplay aggression as opener sets the tone. Head and Abhishek Sharma form one of IPL’s most fearsome opening combinations, both capable of scoring at 10+ runs per over from ball one.

Abhishek Sharma (₹14 crore, India’s T20 opener) is SRH’s most valuable Indian asset. He bats, bowls left-arm spin, and serves as vice-captain under Ishan Kishan while Cummins recovers. At 25 years old, the added leadership responsibility could accelerate his growth.

Nitish Kumar Reddy emerged as a genuine all-rounder in 2025, scoring a Test century in Australia at 21 years old. His batting at No. 6 and medium pace bowling give SRH the balance they need in the lower middle order.

SRH Strengths for IPL 2026

Most explosive batting lineup in IPL. Head (SR 162.61), Klaasen (SR 172.7), Livingstone, Abhishek Sharma. When this top 5 fires, 250+ is routine. SRH hold three of the four highest IPL totals in history, including the all-time record 287/3 from 2024.

Pace bowling depth. Even without Cummins, SRH have Carse (90mph), Harshal (death specialist), Unadkat (left-arm), and Shivam Mavi. Four different types of pace gives Daniel Vettori tactical options at every stage.

Hyderabad is a batting paradise. Average first-innings score of 204 since 2024. SRH’s aggressive style perfectly suits their home ground. Visiting bowlers dread the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Coaching quality. Vettori as head coach with Muttiah Muralitharan as spin coach and Varun Aaron as bowling coach brings international experience at every level. Muralitharan working with young spinners like Zeeshan Ansari could develop the one area SRH lack.

SRH Weaknesses and Concerns

Spin bowling is a crisis. Washington Sundar (traded), Zampa (released), Chahar (released). SRH’s only specialist spinner is Zeeshan Ansari, an unproven left-arm spinner. Livingstone offers part-time leg-spin. On turning tracks at Chepauk (CSK) and Eden Gardens (KKR), SRH will leak runs between overs 7-15. This was the difference between 6th and 4th in 2025.

Cummins’s absence hurts twice. SRH lose their captain AND their best death bowler simultaneously. No one in the squad replicates Cummins’s ability to bowl the 18th and 20th overs under pressure. Carse is talented but unproven in that role in IPL.

Two away matches to start. SRH play at Chinnaswamy (Mar 28 vs RCB) and Eden Gardens (Apr 2 vs KKR) before their first home match on April 5. Both venues favour spin bowling and home teams. Starting 0-2 without Cummins is a realistic scenario.

Overseas slot pressure. Seven overseas players for 4 slots means three sit out every match. When Cummins returns, Carse (who may have found form in the interim) gets dropped. Managing overseas egos is a coaching challenge.

Pat Cummins captains SRH for a third consecutive year, but the lumbar stress fracture means he misses the opening matches. SRH confirmed on March 18 that Ishan Kishan takes over as stand-in captain, with Abhishek Sharma as vice-captain. Cummins arrived in India on March 23 to continue rehabilitation with SRH’s medical team.

Daniel Vettori continues as head coach, emphasizing the aggressive playing style SRH are known for. His support staff is specialist-heavy:

The floor is also visible. No reliable spinner means middle-overs leakage on turning tracks. Two away matches to start, without Cummins, could put SRH in an early hole. They finished 6th in 2025 with largely the same batting core because batting alone does not win T20 tournaments.
