The version that turned up in Oakland is the one we warned about all season. In the Qualifier, Andre Russell’s unbeaten 62 with half-centuries from Colin Munro and Rovman Powell set 188, and the attack led by Sunil Narine and captain Jason Holder defended it against the league’s best batting side. That earned the direct final spot and two days of rest while Washington fought through the Challenger, and in the final the same attack held its nerve, Narine taking 3 for 13 as 164 proved one run too many for Washington to chase. Washington Freedom, runners-up
The 2024 champions played the two most impressive knockouts of the tournament: a 270-run chase with 8 balls to spare to knock out MI New York, then 238/6 to beat the top-seeded Unicorns 24 hours later. Nobody in the final batted better on the road there. But the workload our model kept returning to told in the end: a third must-win game in four days against a rested side, and chasing 165 they finished on 163/9, one run short. The fatigue story we flagged is exactly how the final turned.
San Francisco Unicorns: out, twice beaten
Our pre-playoff favourites, and the table said the pick was fair: top seed, best net run rate. Oakland said otherwise.
