The LA Knight Riders are MLC 2026 champions. They beat Washington Freedom by 1 run in the final at the Oakland Coliseum, posting 164 all out before holding Washington to 163/9 chasing 165, for the first title in the franchise’s history. Our model made LA Knight Riders narrow favourites on rest and route, and the call landed by the tightest margin the game allows. Washington, the form side who chased 270 to end MI New York’s reign and then beat the top-seeded Unicorns, ran it to the final ball and fell one short. Sunil Narine (3 for 13) was Player of the Match. Our pre-playoff favourites San Francisco Unicorns fell twice at Oakland; that record stays on this page, because that is how we work.

Our Title Read: The Final

We weighed the same things all season: seed, net run rate, current form, squad depth and the playoff path. The path argument decided more than our pre-playoff ranking did — the Qualifier’s second life saved nobody (San Francisco lost both their chances), and the team that used the direct route lifted the trophy. Here is where the four ended up against our pre-playoff read.

TeamSeedOur Title ReadWhy
LA Knight Riders2ChampionsWon the Qualifier, straight to the final, rested, then won the final by 1 run for a first MLC title. Narine 3/13 in the decider.
Washington FreedomRunners-upChased 270, then beat the top seeds, but fell one run short in the final, a third knockout in four days.
San Francisco Unicorns1OutOur pre-playoff favourites. Lost the Qualifier by 7, then the Challenger by 7 despite Short's 121*.
MI New York3OutThe defending champions posted 266 in the Eliminator and still lost: Washington chased it with 8 balls to spare.

In short: we made LA Knight Riders narrow favourites on rest and route, and they won — by one run, the tightest result the game allows, with Washington Freedom's chase-hardened batting a single hit from flipping it. Our pre-playoff pick San Francisco fell twice, and that record stays on this page because that is how we work.

The Finalists, And How The Others Fell

LA Knight Riders, the champions

The version that turned up in Oakland is the one we warned about all season. In the Qualifier, Andre Russell’s unbeaten 62 with half-centuries from Colin Munro and Rovman Powell set 188, and the attack led by Sunil Narine and captain Jason Holder defended it against the league’s best batting side. That earned the direct final spot and two days of rest while Washington fought through the Challenger, and in the final the same attack held its nerve, Narine taking 3 for 13 as 164 proved one run too many for Washington to chase. Streaky all season, champions at the only time it matters.

Washington Freedom, runners-up

The 2024 champions played the two most impressive knockouts of the tournament: a 270-run chase with 8 balls to spare to knock out MI New York, then 238/6 to beat the top-seeded Unicorns 24 hours later. Nobody in the final batted better on the road there. But the workload our model kept returning to told in the end: a third must-win game in four days against a rested side, and chasing 165 they finished on 163/9, one run short. The fatigue story we flagged is exactly how the final turned.

San Francisco Unicorns: out, twice beaten

Our pre-playoff favourites, and the table said the pick was fair: top seed, best net run rate. Oakland said otherwise. They lost the Qualifier by 7 runs despite Matthew Short’s unbeaten 94, then the Challenger by 7 runs despite his 121 not out — two big knocks from the captain, two defeats. The second life the Qualifier route grants was exactly the cushion we credited them for; they used it and still fell.

MI New York: the champions dethroned

The defending champions posted 266/9 in the Eliminator and lost. That is not a collapse, it is simply being out-batted: Washington chased it in 18.4 overs. Two titles in three seasons meant nobody wrote them off from the third seed — we didn’t either, but the three-wins-in-a-row route we flagged as their biggest obstacle claimed them at the first hurdle.

MLC Champions: 2023 to 2026

  • 2023: MI New York won the inaugural MLC title, beating Seattle Orcas in the final.
  • 2024: Washington Freedom were champions, defeating San Francisco Unicorns.
  • 2025: MI New York claimed their second title, beating Washington Freedom in the final.
  • 2026: LA Knight Riders won their first title, beating Washington Freedom by 1 run.

MI New York remain the only two-time MLC winners. The LA Knight Riders join the champions list for the first time in 2026, while Washington Freedom have now lost the final in two of the last three seasons.

Major League Cricket 2026 is decided: the LA Knight Riders are champions, beating Washington Freedom by 1 run in the final at the Oakland Coliseum for their first MLC title. Our model made the Knight Riders narrow favourites on rest and route, and the call landed by the tightest margin possible. LAKR posted 164 all out; Washington fell one run short on 163/9, and Sunil Narine (3 for 13) took the match award.

When and where was the MLC 2026 final?

The MLC 2026 final was played on Saturday 18 July 2026 at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, California, where the LA Knight Riders beat Washington Freedom by 1 run. The whole playoff round was at Oakland: Qualifier and Eliminator on 15 July, Challenger on 16 July, and the final on 18 July.

How did the MLC 2026 playoffs go?

In the Qualifier, LA Knight Riders beat San Francisco Unicorns by 7 runs (187/3 against 180/4) to go straight to the final. In the Eliminator, Washington Freedom chased a huge 267 target with 8 balls to spare, ending MI New York's title defence. Washington then beat San Francisco by 7 runs in the Challenger (238/6 against 231/6) despite Matthew Short's unbeaten 121, eliminating the top seed and taking the second final spot.

Who has won MLC in 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026?

MI New York won the inaugural title in 2023 (beating Seattle Orcas) and again in 2025 (beating Washington Freedom). Washington Freedom were champions in 2024, defeating San Francisco Unicorns. In 2026 the LA Knight Riders won their first title, beating Washington Freedom by 1 run. MI New York remain the only two-time MLC winners.

How is the MLC 2026 title decided?

MLC uses a four-match playoff. The top two seeds meet in the Qualifier, and the winner goes straight to the final. The third and fourth seeds meet in the Eliminator, where the loser is knocked out. The Eliminator winner then plays the Qualifier loser in the Challenger, and that winner takes the last final spot. It rewards a high seed: the Qualifier winner needs one win, while an Eliminator team must win three in a row.

Who were the star players in the MLC 2026 final?

For the champion LA Knight Riders, Sunil Narine was Player of the Match in the final with 3 for 13, the spin threat that alongside captain Jason Holder capped a title run built on the Qualifier win from Andre Russell (62 not out), Colin Munro (51) and Rovman Powell (50 not out). Washington Freedom's batting carried them to the final, a 270 chase against MI New York and 238/6 against San Francisco, but it stalled one run short in the decider.
